Understanding Attendance Percentage for Indian Boards

Why 75% attendance matters and how to track it easily.

Many Indian school and college boards require a minimum attendance percentage for students to appear in exams. Here’s what you need to know.

Why attendance rules exist

Boards like CBSE, state boards, and universities often mandate 75% attendance. The idea is to ensure students attend classes regularly and don’t rely only on last-minute preparation.

How percentage is calculated

Attendance % = (Number of classes attended ÷ Total number of classes) × 100

Example: If total classes were 80 and a student attended 62, the percentage is (62 ÷ 80) × 100 = 77.5%.

You can use our Attendance Percentage Calculator to do this in seconds.

Practical tips for tutors

  1. Mark daily — Don’t leave it for the end of the month. Mark present/absent every day.
  2. Define "total" clearly — Decide what counts as a "class" (e.g. one period = one class) and stick to it.
  3. Warn early — If a student is slipping below 75%, inform parents so they can encourage attendance.

Offline tracking

An offline app like Batch Tutor lets you record attendance on your phone or tablet without needing the internet. Your data stays on your device.
